Back to the Smoky Isle – Laphroaig Quarter Cask 1815

blank

This evening I am back for another Islay Scotch from one of my favourite drams – Laphroaig Quarter Cask 1815 .

I love the simply of the labelling and bottling that speaks almost of an age gone by. Its white label and green bottle is classic and timeless. But this is a complex dram in every sense. It is distinctively from Islay, and unapologetically from Laphroaig.

Laphroaig – Quarter Cask 1815 – 48% ABV

Abound with smoke, salt and a touch of sweet. The flavour profile is unmistakable, but it conjures up different memories for me than the 10 Year. I am brought back to family gatherings on the east coast. A smoked ham has just come out of the oven and is being sliced. There is a pineapple glaze that mingles and intertwines with the smokiness of the ham. That’s what this dram is, a glazed smoked ham just out of the oven.

Seemingly, this whiskey is not for beginners, but I have had more than one non-whisker drinker like this after a nice meal. There is something in it for everyone. It is a longer finish than many, but not harsh.

If you read the back of the label, they ensure the taster knows about the cloudiness from adding water given that it’s not filtered. The attempt to educate us is not lost on me. I like how they barrier filter as they did in the old days. It’s nice that with all the selections at the liquor store now, I can still see that tall white, distinctive label beckoning me to remember.
