Sometimes it’s nice to have a treat after a long week. As I was looking though my collection, I see a lot of nice bottles, but I was looking for something different to end a long week. I wasn’t sure what it was going to be, but I knew that once I saw it I would know.
The Macallan Double Cask 12 year – 40% ABV
To be honest, I never really gravitate toward Macallan. There are so many great drams out there, and I am still discovering many of them. A small portion of me feels that I am the victim of marketing when I buy a bottle of Macallan. They have done such a great job of placing themselves in the premium shelf space, but somehow feels overrated.
But every time I have a dram of Macallan, I like it. I don’t want to like it, but I do.
The packaging is refined and elegant. The gold accenting on the labelling and the shrink at the top, along with the bold white label and black font gives a stiff upper lip type of look. It’s the type of bottle you can imagine sitting on the bar of a stock broker. The blue suit with the stark white shirt and gold cufflinks. That’s what I see when I look at it.
Inside, the honey coloured whiskey catches the light just right. The bottle feels nice in the hand and its easy to pour a dram. It’s rich in honey and citrus that are typical of the highland style.
It has sherry, honey and oak on the nose and is an easy drinker, which you would expect from a 40% ABV. It’s well balanced and has hints of fruit and caramel.
This bottle would make a great gift for the whiskey drinker and non drinker alike. If you are looking for a nice dram, that feels a little elevated from your daily drinker, but still won’t break the bank, choose the Macallan Double Cask!
