I love finding new scotches that I haven’t tried before. I love reading the marketing material on the outside of the box, and then opening up to reveal the scotch inside. I must admit, I know very little about the Orkney islands or the distilleries that are located there. I wrote an article recently that even mentioned that I thought Highland Park was a highland whiskey.
Sometimes the box containing the bottle of whiskey can be a little uninspiring. It can be a plain or say nothing about the character of the whiskey waiting inside. But not with Scapa Skiren.
Scapa – Skiren – 40% ABV
The package screams blue skies, the ocean, and the horizon calling your name. It’s marine looking, kind of what I envision when I think about the Orkney Islands. A far northern shore, looking out onto the ocean’s horizon.
I know that look. I have experienced it a thousand times standing on the Cape looking east over the Atlantic. Seeing nothing and everything at the same time. A big sky, a fresh breeze and taking a moment to yourself.
Scapa describes this dram as being inspired by summer’s bright, glittering skies. That’s also the Norse description of the word Skiren. And it’s also a nice way to describe the character of this dram. It’s bright, glittering and fresh. An easy drinker. Maybe the hint of brine, but nothing obvious.
When I take another look at the box, it is indeed a representation of what you will find in the bottle. A simple, fresh easy drinking dram. Well done Scapa Skiren.
As you can see in the picture, I thoroughly enjoyed this dram and will look for it again. If you are looking for a smooth creamy dram, then put this one on your list. If you have someone who is new to whiskey, this will be a great choice ease them in. I loved the dram and writing this Scapa Skiren review.
