The picture above says almost everything that needs to be said about this dram. It’s a glass of summer. It maybe winter here in the nation’s capital, and all I can see is snow. But I can forget about that and look forward to spring as I pour myself this dram.
Glenmorangie 10 Year – 40% ABV
This distillery is rather interesting for those who are students of whiskey as I am. It boasts the highest line arms in whiskey! Glenmorangie themselves nod to the high line arms with a motif of their line arm next to a giraffe on the box.
Not to geek out too much, but the line arms are what the liquid pass through during the distilling process on their way to the condenser. This is not only beautiful, but for a very specific purpose. As the vapour passes up the line arm, it is constantly interacting with the copper that the arms are made of. That has a purification effect, and produces those clean, light flavours that this dram is known for.
Anyways, back to the whiskey. For me, it’s a reminder of the beaches of West Africa. Those hot afternoons driving past the orange vendors on the side of the road as we travel looking for that fresh Atlantic Ocean breeze, and then finding it.
This dram is bright, full of fruit, oranges and peaches. Maybe a touch of vanilla from the bourbon barrels it has been sitting in. The colour is light, as if freshly squeezed from fruit picked this morning. It’s simple, creamy and easy on the palette.
If you are looking for a cure for the winter blues, then I hope you find yourself where I am, with a glass of Glenmorangie 10 year.
