Whisky Tasting in Ottawa — What to Expect from a Private Session

blank

If you’ve never been to a private whisky tasting before, you might be wondering what actually happens. Is it formal? Do you need to know anything about whisky beforehand? Will you feel out of place if you’re a complete beginner?

The short answer: no, no, and absolutely not.

Here’s exactly what a private whisky tasting in Ottawa looks like from start to finish.

It starts with a conversation

Before anything is poured, we take a few minutes to get a feel for the group. Are you whisky curious but brand new? A seasoned collector looking to go deeper? Somewhere in between? Every tasting is built around where you are, not where we think you should be.

There’s no wrong starting point. Some of our best sessions have been with groups who couldn’t tell a Scotch from a bourbon when they walked in — and left with a genuine appreciation for both.

The pour

A typical private tasting features three to five whiskies, chosen to tell a story. That might mean a journey through Scotland’s regions — from the delicate florals of Speyside to the smoky, medicinal character of Islay. Or it might mean a world tour, moving through Irish single pot stills, Japanese blends, and Canadian rye.

Each pour is accompanied by tasting notes — colour, nose, palate, finish — explained in plain language, not jargon. You’ll learn to identify what you’re actually tasting, and why the whisky tastes the way it does.

The education piece

This is what separates a guided tasting from simply opening a few bottles. As a Certified Scotch Professional and Certified Whisky Specialist recognized by the Council of Whisky Masters, Chris brings formal expertise to every session — covering production methods, regional traditions, maturation science, and the stories behind each distillery.

It’s educational without feeling like a lecture. Most guests tell us they had no idea whisky had this much depth to it.

The setting

Private tastings take place at a venue of your choosing — your home, a private dining room, a club or event space in Ottawa or Kanata. We bring everything needed: the whisky, the glassware, the setup. You provide the guests.

Group sizes typically range from two to sixty. Smaller groups tend to go deeper; larger groups take on more of an event feel. Both work beautifully.

Who books private tastings?

All kinds of people. Couples celebrating an anniversary. Friend groups looking for something genuinely different on a Saturday night. Families marking a milestone. Collectors who want to explore a region or style in depth.

If you’ve been looking for something more interesting than dinner and a movie — this is it.
